Encrypted before it leaves
Offsite copies are encrypted before they leave our building. The storage providers can't read them.
Can't be deleted early
Offsite copies are locked: nothing younger than 7 days can be deleted, even by us.
Tested every week
Every week we restore samples from the offsite copies and check them byte for byte.

An encrypted copy goes offsite to Cloudflare R2 in the western US (locked: nothing younger than 7 days can be deleted) and to our own server in Germany. Every week we restore samples and check them byte for byte.

Questions
Do I have to turn backups on?
No. Everything is backed up by default. The one add-on is daily backups for servers, because a server's disk can be large.
Will restoring overwrite my current data?
Not unless you choose to. Mail comes back into a new 'Restored' folder, files into a restore folder, and databases into a copy.
Where are the offsite copies?
Encrypted, with Cloudflare R2 in the western US and on our own server in Germany. Only we hold the keys.
Should I keep my own backups too?
For anything you can't afford to lose, yes, and we make that easy: everything can be exported. Our backups are a strong safety net, not a replacement for your own copy.
